St. Leonhard in the Passeier Valley

The main locality of the Passeier Valley

It is characterized by its numerous waterfalls, among which stand out those of Stulles, which are among the highest in Europe: the water rushes over boulders from 112 at first, then from 230 meters in height. The name \"Passeier\" born during the Romansh colonization and probably indicated a \"Prasüra\", \"Pra de sura\", i.e. a meadow above. Today, the proportion of people who still speak Romansch in the three municipalities of Passeiertal S. Leonardo, Moos and S. Martin, barely reaches 0.1%. Talking about the landscape, the Passeiertal is very various, and is used to be distinguished between a high and low part, reflecting two different climatic zones and vegetation. While the low Passeiertal is known for its mild climate and its Mediterranean vegetation, the upper part is characterized by its rough and wild nature. And there, where the valley ends, at 2,500 meters, the flowers grow in summer and there appear meadows of red rhododendron: a spectacle not to be missed! San Leonardo is the heart of Passeiertal. Just outside the center, history amateurs can visit the house where Andreas Hofer was born, a patriot who fought for the freedom of the Tyrol. On the farm Sandhof, which has been renewed into a museum, you can visit an ethnological exhibition and a backdoor area, particularly attractive to children, where there are reconstructions of typical homes, a bakery where the bread is baked by the farmer and the sheep are sheared with scissors to recreate the old grandparents' atmosphere. The French cemetery is also worth a visit, in San Leonardo, where lie the men who fought a final battle in November 1809 with the defenders of freedom of the Tyrol. The historic farmsteads, dating back to 13th century, represent another of the treasures of Passeiertal. They go back to an agreement between peasants and lords, dated 1200-1300, which states that the first were exempted from paying taxes and could go armed, but in return, if necessary, were to ride a horse and defend the feudal lord. This type of farmsteads are located about eleven times in Passeiertal. To enjoy a unique landscape, it is enough to reach the church of St. Hippolytus, 1000 m height, in the town of Glaiten. From here, the view opens up along the Passeiertal in Merano! Spectacular! Another well-known place is represented by the ruins of Castle Giovo, built in 1250, which was the residence of the lords of Passeiertal.
