The eco-certified 4-star superior Naturhotel Outside is located in Matrei in East Tyrol/Tirol, right in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park – with over 1,000 km of hiking trails right outside the door. For two generations, the Ganzer family has run the hotel with a clear philosophy: authenticity is enough. Not a staged concept, but a place shaped by its location, natural materials, philosophy, and the people behind it. With 44 rooms and suites, all with mountain views, the hotel is ideal for hiking all year round, skiing in winter, and wellness at any time.
The new Nature SPA spans 2,000 m² and blends indoor and outdoor areas: a chemical-free 20-metre natural pool, a brine bath with 600,000-year-old Deferegger healing water at 35 °C, an outdoor pool also heated to 35 °C with whirlpool function, and five saunas and steam baths – including a Finnish sauna (90 °C), brine steam bath, aroma steam bath, bio-sauna (60 °C), and infrared cabin. A new spa garden with an outdoor yoga deck, plus beauty and massage treatments using natural cosmetics from TEAM Dr. Joseph, complete the offering.
Hiking is part of the hotel's DNA: three times a week, the hotel's own mountain guides lead guests on free hikes through the surrounding mountains – including snowshoe tours in winter – complemented by a weekly national park ranger tour and a weekly yoga programme. The largest ski area in East Tyrol, the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei, is just 900 m from the hotel – a ski shuttle stops right at the door.
Wood, clay, and the East Tyrolean natural stone Serpentinite "Dorfergrün" define the rooms and suites, creating a warm atmosphere with a clear connection to the region.
The cuisine stays true to the house's philosophy: the kitchen, awarded 3 Falstaff forks, focuses on seasonal, predominantly regional ingredients, herbs from its own garden, fermented foods, and produce from surrounding farms. Home-baked bread and homemade jam are also part of the concept.
Getting there: the nearest train station is Lienz, from where the hotel can arrange a transfer on request. Dogs are welcome (advance notice required).
