In the middle of the Outside: In the huge mountain area of East Tyrol there is the family-run Eco-friendly Hotel Outside. Here the nature lies in all of its beauty. The High Tauern National Park attracts mountain-fans with over 1.000 km long hiking paths. Every week the team of the Hotel Outside invides you to 3-5 guided hiking tours – also with snow shoes in Winter – through this charming landscape and shows you the most beautiful traditional managed mountain huts.

The new Nature SPA offers highlights such as the heated 35°C outdoor pool and the first Deferegger Heilwasser brine bath. The healing water from East Tyrol is around 600,000 years old and one of the most effective in the world. The sauna facilities include a Finnish sauna 90°C, brine steam bath, aroma steam bath, bio-sauna 60°C and an infrared cabin. The indoor pool with lounger area and spacious relaxation rooms made from natural materials offer pure relaxation. New from summer 2025: the SPA garden with outdoor yoga deck and extended natural pool. Also new: cosmetic and massage offers with high-tech natural cosmetics from TEAM Dr. Joseph.

The kitchen is the heart of the hotel. The culinary offer of the Eco-friendly Hotel Outside includes everything East Tyrol has to offer. All the products from coffee to meat are sourced locally and perfectly prepared. The herbs come from the hotel garden. The cuisine is outstanding for its selfmade bread and jams. If you are impressed by that you can attend a baking course and learn the secrets from the man of the house himself. Matrei

In the north of the Lienz District the market town Matrei extends through the whole Tauern valley in an altitude of about 975 meters. The second largest community in Tyrol with our selected hotel is considered the Heart of the National Park High Tauern and is the tourist center in this area. It is especially famous for the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei. The frequently as varied and family-friendly awarded ski resort is not only the largest resort in East Tyrol. It also counts as one of the most beautiful ski areas of the Alps.

But Matrei is worth a visit in Summer, too. Impressing mountains, calm lakes, magical larch forests, roaring rivers and vivid meadows. The landscape offers a wide range of different hiking paths and numerous three-thousanders. You can be active by biking, climbing or white-water rafting in the streams of the Isel.

Matrei is also famous for cultural attractions. There is a variety of churches and chapels from different periods. A visit of the castle “Schloss Weißenstein” on a steep lime rock in the North is recommended. For an overall impression of the High Tauern you can visit the “Nationalparkhaus Matrei”.
